1. That essay was a pretty killer takedown of that novel–ruthless, Baldwin making his bones early on. Lockridge, as I’m sure you know, killed himself just two months after the book was published. Probably the truest section of the book was “the great race” printed in Life Magazine in I think November of 1947 (and altered a bit in the book). The book was his mirror and in it he damned himself as much as Baldwin damned the book.
