I’ve thought that for a while. I have the theory that composition is poorly taught to provide job security for composition teachers and to allow rhetoric programs to flourish. I “teach from” (actually, I don’t; I use it for readings and grammar refreshers) a book that makes the simple act of writing an essay so incredibly complicated that students can’t do it.
