I went to an elementary school named after “lynchin'” Ben Tillman. When I describe what it was like to grow up in Charleston at the time of desegregation people think I’m exaggerating the violence of the whites at that time, until I remind them that they rushed from their churches to lock the Freedom Riders into their buses and set them on fire.
